Homeostasis is the body’s ability to keep its internal environment relatively stable and constant, even when conditions around it (or inside it) change.
Here are some few key ideas:
Why it matters — cells (and the enzymes/reactions inside them) only function properly within narrow physiological ranges. Homeostasis is what keeps those ranges stable enough for life to continue, regardless of what’s happening in the external environment or from moment-to-moment internal activity (exercise, eating, temperature changes, etc.).
It’s dynamic, not static — the body is constantly making small adjustments rather than sitting perfectly still at one value. Things like blood glucose, body temperature, blood pH, and water balance all fluctuate slightly and get pulled back toward a “normal range” (the set point).
It works through negative feedback loops:
- A stimulus pushes something away from its set point (e.g. blood glucose rises after a meal)
- A receptor detects that change
- A control centre (often the brain, or sometimes an organ like the pancreas) processes the information and decides what to do
- An effector (a muscle or gland) carries out the correction
- The response brings the variable back toward normal — which then switches the stimulus off, completing the loop
